Field Instrumentation Overview

Field instrumentation provides measurements and input signals from the field to process control systems, turbomachinery control systems, and safety systems installed in a plant. As such, it is critical that the instruments are selected to suit the application, are sized and calibrated properly, with all ambient and process conditions taken into consideration. Failing to do so leads to poorly executed control strategies and loss of revenue and in the worst case scenario can lead to loss of lives and extensive damage to the process equipment and the machineries.

The number one priority for most companies around the world is the safety of its personnel and its assets. To achieve this objective, the hierarchical structure of instruments, valves, and control layers needs to operate in sync from the bottom to the top starting with the inputs from the field instruments. If the instrumentation layer at the bottom doesn’t work, nothing else will.

To make a proper selection of suitable field instruments, you need to understand not only the various aspects of the instruments but also how to best install them in the application, taking into account things like process and ambient temperature, pressure, process media, material selection, vibration, piping arrangement, hazardous area, and more. This requires knowledge and experience about field instrumentation and the process applications they will be applied to.

This is an area in which TIC International can bring expertise and real value. TIC can help during the FEED stage on a new construction project as well as walking the site to collect information for a retrofit or replacement project, and we can take the responsibility for the delivery, installation, and commissioning.

TIC International has not only the knowledge but also a wide range of world class field instruments for process and turbomachinery applications, hazardous areas, SIL rated applications, and more.
