ABB UNITROL 1000 and 6000 series and SYNCHROTACT 6 series are part of a wider portfolio of control and electrical systems, turbomachinery control, field instrumentation, and advanced digital applications designed to serve all power generation facilities.
UNITROL 1000 Series
The UNITROL® 1000 Series is ABB’s excitation system for applications using synchronous machines ranging from 100kVA to 80MVA.
The UNITROL® 1000 Series is used with generators, synchronous motors, windmills, marine electrical propulsion and auxiliary supply, diesel electric locomotives, harbor cranes, and mining trucks.
With built-in dual channel support, advanced load sharing between machines operating in parallel, rotating diode monitoring, automatic synchronizing, and several integrated communication options, the 1000 Series provides high performance in a wide range of temperature and vibration conditions. It is manufactured using the most advanced microprocessor technology and IGBT semiconductors.
UNITROL® 1005 is the smallest system of the family designed for low-end excitation applications with excitation current up to 5A DC.
UNITROL® 1010 is the Indirect Excitation System for small and medium synchronous generators and industrial machines with excitation current up to 10A DC for continuous operations.
UNITROL® 1020 is the Automatic Voltage Regulator for small and medium synchronous generators and industrial machines with excitation current up to 20A DC for continuous operations.
UNITROL® 1000 Flex Systems are prepackaged solutions for applications requiring single or dual channel controllers. All systems are fitted with UNITROL® 1020 FULL as a standard device, leveraging the best solution for optimum price and flexibility. All versions are designed on a common mechanical backplane with various options for I/O and supply modes.
UNITROL® CMT 1000 is a commissioning and maintenance tool for the UNITROL® 1000 product family. The tool is used to setup all parameters and tune the PID to guarantee stable operations. The CMT 1000 software allows extensive supervision of the system, helping the user identify and locate problems during on-site commissioning.
UNITROL 6000 Series and MEGATROL
The UNITROL® 6000 Series is the industry benchmark for technology and availability and is specifically designed to serve the needs of generators within steam, gas, nuclear, and hydro power plants as well as motors in process industries such as steel mills, pulp and paper, chemical, natural gas processing, and refineries.
It features:
- Ultimate control performance to keep the synchronous machine within safe limits.
- Guaranteed grid code compliance through advanced Power System Stabilizer (PSS) options, validated models, and simulation.
- Hardware simulator to expedite tuning and site testing.
- Simple operation, monitoring, and maintenance.
- Single/double channel control configuration (additional backup channel on request) and a wide selection of thyristor bridge modules to meet all field data and availability requirements.
UNITROL® 6000 Medium is a fully customizable solution for currents up to 2,000A DC.
UNITROL® 6000 X-Power is a high-end fully customizable solution for currents between 2,000A DC and 12,000A DC.
MEGATROL® is a power package for gas turbine start-up and generator excitation. The ignition of a gas turbine is a complicated sequence of events where several systems are interacting at different times.
MEGATROL® is a smart and ultra-compact solution that combines MEGADRIVE-LCI Static Starting Device (SSD) with UNITROL® 6000 Static Excitation System (SES) to enable synchronous machines to start gas turbines and provide a source of reliable power to the grid.
MEGATROL® is available in three versions:
- Light for 1 to 3 MW
- Medium for 3 to 5 MW
- Power for 5 to 15.5 MW
The scalable and expandable cross-start functionality enables one SSD to start multiple turbines. The system allows a maximum of three SSDs with six turbines and generators with their related excitation systems.
The integrated UNITROL® 6000 control functionality makes MEGATROL® ready to support any grid code requirement. The powerful data recording capabilities of the Excitation Control Terminal (ECT) allow users to test, tune, and prove the performance of control, limiter functions, and system stability.
SYNCHROTACT 6 Series
The main purpose of the SYNCHROTACT® 6 synchronization system is to protect power plant generators and substation components from the potentially destructive effects of current surges caused by circuit breakers closing in non-synchronized conditions. SYNCHROTACT® 6 synchronizes up to 20 circuit breakers with a single unit. The consequences of faulty synchronization can be devastating, like damage to generator shafts, winding heads, block transformers, and more.
In accordance with the IEC 61508 SIL2 international standard for functional safety, SYNCHROTACT® 6 has a dual channel system with two processors each made by a different vendor.
The design warrants 100% safe synchronization ensuring personnel and asset safety while maximizing uptime and operational life.
The SYNCHROTACT® 6 product family includes:
- SYN 6200 – Synchrocheck
- SYN 6201 – Automatic single channel synchronizer
- SYN 6202 – Automatic dual channel synchronizer
- SYN 6302 – Redundant automatic dual channel synchronizer
SYNCHROTACT® 6 is designed for easy replacement of older devices like SYNCHROTACT® 3, 4, and 5.
